Short answer

The best hiking is in the cloud forest of the Obô Natural Park, towards Pico Cão Grande in the south, along the far-south coast and in Príncipe’s forests. Go in the drier months, start early, and always walk forest trails with a local guide.

The main walks

Lagoa Amélia

A walk through mossy cloud forest to a marshy volcanic crater, starting in the highlands above Monte Café. Moderate, often wet, excellent for birds and plants such as the wild begonias.

Pico de São Tomé

The island’s highest peak. A serious undertaking through dense, wet forest, usually as a very long day or an overnight trip with a guide.

Towards Pico Cão Grande

A short but steep, humid forest hike towards the base of the needle. Details here.

The far-south coast

Beach-to-beach walking between Praia Jalé and Praia Inhame, and longer multi-day coastal treks starting from the south.

Príncipe

Guided forest walks from the northern hotels, including a trail to the church ruins at Ribeira Izé, and longer routes into the interior depending on access.

Conditions

Expect mud, slippery roots, humidity and sudden rain at almost any time of year, and much more of it outside June to September. Distances look short; the ground makes them long. Mornings are clearest.

Shoes with real grip (trails are muddy and rooty), a rain jacket, at least two litres of water, insect repellent and a dry bag for your phone.
