Getting around
Do you need a 4x4 in São Tomé?
Road conditions, when a 4x4 matters, whether you can drive yourself, what a driver-guide involves and how to compare quotes.
Not for the capital and the main coastal roads. Yes, or at least a high-clearance vehicle, for the far south, inland plantation roads and anywhere after heavy rain.
The bigger question is whether to drive yourself. For most first-time visitors a driver-guide is the better choice.
What the roads are actually like
São Tomé has three main routes out of the capital: north and west along the coast towards Neves, inland into the highlands, and down the east coast through Santana and São João dos Angolares to Porto Alegre in the far south. That east-coast road is the one most visitors use.
Accounts of road quality vary a lot by year and by who is writing. Some travellers describe most roads as poor but manageable in a high-clearance car; one older guide warned that the roughly 80 km from the capital to Porto Alegre could take a full day, while another source says the southern roads are now generally better than those in the north. Repairs, rain and landslips change things quickly, so we check current conditions with drivers before each trip rather than repeating one report.
- Potholes and broken surfaces are common away from the main routes.
- Unpaved tracks lead to many roças, trailheads and southern beaches.
- Rain turns some of those tracks to mud. A 4x4 matters most between roughly October and May.
- People and animals use the roads constantly, and almost nothing is lit at night.
Self-drive, driver-guide or taxi?
| Option | Works well for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Driver-guide | First visits, the south, forest walks, roças. You get local knowledge, translation and someone who knows the roads. | Quality varies by person. Agree vehicle, hours and inclusions in writing. |
| Self-drive hire | Confident drivers who want full independence and are staying a while. | Local firms only, older vehicles, insurance terms, Portuguese for problems, no night driving. |
| Taxi | Getting around the capital and short hops near town. | Agree the fare first. Not practical for full days in the south. |
| Shared taxi / minibus | Budget travel on main routes, if you have time. | Slow, infrequent to remote places, cash only, Portuguese essential. |
What a driver-guide day usually includes
A typical private day leaves your hotel around 8:30 and returns around 5 pm in an air-conditioned car, with the route adapted to your interests. Public listings commonly exclude lunch and boat fees (for example, the boat to Ilhéu das Rolas or a mangrove trip). Some drivers advertise a 4x4 that turns out to be an ordinary car, so confirm the actual vehicle.
Questions to settle before you book a driver
- Which vehicle, exactly? Is it four-wheel drive or just high clearance?
- Who drives, and how good is their English (or French, Spanish, Italian)?
- What time does the day start and end, and what does overtime cost?
- Are fuel, lunch, entrance fees and boat crossings included?
- How and when is payment made, and in which currency?
- What happens if it rains or a road is closed?

Quick answers
Can I drive myself in São Tomé?
Yes. Self-drive hire is available from local firms rather than international chains, and you should carry an International Driving Permit with your national licence. It suits confident drivers who are comfortable with potholes, unlit roads, limited signage and some Portuguese. Most first-time visitors find a driver-guide easier and better value once you count the time saved.
Do I need a 4x4 on Príncipe?
For the main road between Santo António, the airport and the northern hotels, travellers report an ordinary car is usually fine in dry weather. Southern and forest tracks are rougher and can need four-wheel drive after rain. Most visitors on Príncipe use hotel transfers or a driver rather than hiring a car.
How much does a driver-guide cost?
Public booking-platform listings for private full-day São Tomé tours with a driver-guide showed roughly US$100–120 per person when we checked in October 2026. Multi-day hire, groups and direct bookings are priced differently. We quote a total price for your specific days before you commit.
Is it safe to drive at night?
We advise against it. Most roads are unlit, and pedestrians, cyclists, motorbikes and animals use them after dark. Plan long drives, especially to and from the south, for daylight.
