Driving days
4x4 days and multi-day drives
Round-the-island days, the south road to Porto Alegre, inland roças and the routes where a high-clearance vehicle matters.
The classic São Tomé days are by road: west along the north coast, up into the highlands, and down the east coast to the far south. A high-clearance vehicle and a good driver-guide make them easy.
The three classic routes
North and west
Roça Agostinho Neto, north-coast beaches and fishing villages towards Neves. A comfortable full day from the capital.
Centre and highlands
Trindade, Monte Café and the edge of the Obô forest, often combined with a guided walk towards Lagoa Amélia. Short distances, steep roads, frequent mist.
East coast and the far south
Boca do Inferno, Santana, Ribeira Afonso, São João dos Angolares, viewpoints over Pico Cão Grande, Porto Alegre and the boat to Rolas. Doable as a very long day from the capital, much better with one or two nights in the south.
Multi-day drives
For most travellers we suggest hiring one driver-guide for several consecutive days: a north and roças day, a highlands day, then a two or three night loop through the south. The driver stays with you, plans around weather and road conditions, and your luggage moves with you.

Quick answers
Can I see the whole island in one day?
Some guides offer a long round-island day covering the north, centre and south, including a quick Rolas crossing. It is possible but rushed, with a lot of time in the car. Two or three separate days, or a night in the south, are far more enjoyable.
Is a multi-day driver-guide better than separate tours?
Usually, yes. One driver-guide for several days means one relationship, continuity, flexibility around weather, and no daily pickups from scratch. It also makes staying in the south straightforward.
