Sample itinerary
Seven days on São Tomé
A week on São Tomé island: the capital and north coast, the cloud forest and plantations, then three nights in the wild south with Pico Cão Grande and Ilhéu das Rolas.
This is a researched planning example, not a fixed package or a trip we have run on these exact dates. Drive times are estimates. Flights, boats, guides and rooms are confirmed for your dates only when we quote, and the order often changes around the domestic flight schedule and the weather.
Day by day
-
Day 1. São Tomé city
Arrive in São Tomé
The airport sits on the edge of the capital, so the transfer is short. Depending on your arrival time, walk the seafront Marginal, change some euros at a bank rather than the airport desk, and get a local SIM card sorted.
-
Day 2. São Tomé city
North coast and the roças
Drive west along the north coast towards Neves with a driver-guide, stopping at Roça Agostinho Neto, one of the largest former plantation estates, and at beaches and fishing villages along the way.
-
Day 3. São Tomé city or a highland lodge
Cloud forest and Lagoa Amélia
Head inland through Trindade to the old coffee estate at Monte Café, then walk in the Obô forest towards Lagoa Amélia, a marshy crater in the cloud forest. Trails are muddy and slippery for much of the year; a local guide is strongly advised.
Walking conditions depend on recent rain. -
Day 4. The south (around Porto Alegre)
Down the east coast to the south
Leave early. The east-coast road passes the Boca do Inferno blowhole, Santana, Ribeira Afonso and São João dos Angolares before reaching the far south. Stop often; the drive is part of the day.
-
Day 5. The south
Pico Cão Grande
See the volcanic needle from roadside viewpoints, or join a guided forest walk towards its base. The walk is short on paper but steep, humid and slippery; start early, before the afternoon cloud and rain.
The walk needs a local guide and reasonable fitness. -
Day 6. The south
Ilhéu das Rolas and the equator
Take the boat from Porto Alegre to Ilhéu das Rolas, walk up to the equator monument and spend the rest of the day on the beaches. Between roughly October and March, ask your lodge about turtle nesting on the southern beaches at night.
Boat times and sea conditions must be confirmed locally. -
Day 7. Departure
Back to the capital and fly home
Drive north to the capital and the airport. Leave generous time: if your international flight is early, spend the last night in São Tomé city instead of the south.
Book ahead
What has to be secured early
- A driver-guide for days 2–7 (the single most important booking)
- Accommodation in the south, which is limited
- Guides for the Lagoa Amélia and Cão Grande walks
- The boat to Ilhéu das Rolas (confirm on the day before)
Depends on
What can change the plan
- Rain affects forest trails and some southern roads, especially outside the June–September dry season.
- International flight days into and out of São Tomé are not daily on every route; your dates shape the plan.
- Drive times are estimates. We confirm current road conditions with the driver before you travel.
Plan with a person

Tell us your arrival and departure flights, who is travelling and what matters most. We will adapt the route, check flight, room and guide availability for your dates, and send a written quote showing exactly what is confirmed.
