The central highlands
A cooler day inland: the coffee estate and museum at Monte Café, the Bom Sucesso botanical garden, the São Nicolau waterfall and a guided walk towards Lagoa Amélia.
A short drive inland, the highlands are cool, green and often in cloud. Old coffee estates, a small botanical garden, a forest waterfall and the start of the Obô Natural Park make an easy half day or a fuller day with a guided walk.

Monte Café
A former coffee estate on the road up through Trindade, with long wooden buildings and a small museum on the history of coffee and cocoa production, with old machinery and photographs.
Bom Sucesso botanical garden
A small, simple botanical garden at Bom Sucesso, inside Obô Natural Park, first set up to collect the island’s orchids and a good introduction to its flora. It lies a few kilometres from Lagoa Amélia.
Cascata de São Nicolau
A waterfall in the forest above Monte Café, framed by ferns and tropical flowers. It is not a thundering cascade, but the setting is lovely; how much walking is involved depends on the route and recent rain.
Lagoa Amélia (optional, guided)
For walkers: a guided trail through mossy cloud forest to a marshy volcanic crater. See hiking.
