Do you need a guide?
Where a guide is essential, where it is optional, and how far English gets you on islands where Portuguese and Forro are spoken.
You can travel around São Tomé without a guide. But for forest hikes, birding, the far south and any day where language matters, a good local guide turns a difficult day into a great one.
Where a guide is essentially required
- Forest hikes: Lagoa Amélia, the walk towards Pico Cão Grande, Pico de São Tomé and Príncipe’s forest trails. Paths are unmarked or poorly marked, wet and steep.
- Birding: finding the islands’ endemic species depends heavily on guides who know the sites and calls.
- Boat trips: Rolas crossings, Príncipe’s coast and whale watching run with local boat crews.
Where a guide is optional but worth it
- Plantation estates (roças): you can walk around many of them, but the history of forced and contract labour behind the buildings needs context that signboards rarely give.
- Driving days in the south: a driver-guide handles roads, directions, stops and translation.
- Your first day: a half day with a local guide is a fast way to get your bearings, change money and set up a SIM.
Where you will be fine on your own
- Walking around São Tomé city and Santo António.
- Beaches near your accommodation.
- Short taxi rides with an agreed fare.
Language, honestly
Portuguese is the official language. Travellers regularly report that communication outside tourist businesses can be hard without it, and that hiring a driver-guide was the fix. Some guides speak English, French, Spanish or Italian; ask before booking rather than assuming. If someone advertises as English-speaking, a short voice call or WhatsApp voice note is the quickest test.
How we match guides
We look at what you want to do, your fitness and pace, and the languages you need, then propose a specific person or operator. See the people who show you the islands.

Quick answers
Is English enough in São Tomé & Príncipe?
In the higher-end hotels and with tourism-focused guides, usually yes. Elsewhere, Portuguese is the working language, alongside creoles such as Forro, and English is limited. A little Portuguese, a translation app with offline Portuguese, and a guide or driver who speaks your language make a large difference.
Can I hike without a guide?
Some short, well-used paths are walkable alone, but forest trails such as those towards Lagoa Amélia or the base of Pico Cão Grande are steep, slippery, poorly marked and quickly change after rain. We strongly recommend a local guide for any forest hike.
Do I need a guide on Príncipe?
For beaches near your hotel, no. For forest walks, birding and boat trips, yes: these are run with local guides or boat crews, often arranged through hotels.
