Short answer

São Tomé city is small, faded and full of character. Half a day with a local guide covers the fort and national museum, the cathedral, the market and the seafront, and gives you the history that makes the rest of the island make sense.

What to see

Fort São Sebastião and the national museum

A 16th-century Portuguese fort on the bay, now home to the country’s only history museum. The collection of religious art and colonial-era objects is modest and labelled in Portuguese, which is exactly why a guide helps.

The cathedral and the centre

The white, twin-towered cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Graça anchors the centre, a few minutes’ walk from colonial-era streets, government buildings and the old market.

The market and the seafront

The market is a lively introduction to island food and everyday life. The seafront Avenida Marginal 12 de Julho runs along the bay past the fort; it is pleasant in the late afternoon.

Chocolate and culture

São Tomé cocoa is the islands’ calling card, and chocolate from estates such as Diogo Vaz is sold in the capital. The chef João Carlos Silva, of Roça São João in the south, also runs CACAU, an arts space in the city. Ask us what is open and on during your dates.

Also asked

Quick answers

Is the national museum worth it?

Yes, with context. It is the country’s only history museum, housed in a 16th-century fort, but labels are in Portuguese and the collection is modest, so a knowledgeable guide makes a big difference.

How long do I need in the capital?

Half a day covers the fort, museum, cathedral, market and seafront. Many travellers fit it into their arrival or departure day.

Is the city walkable?

The centre is compact and easy to walk. Use a taxi with an agreed fare for longer hops, and avoid walking unlit areas at night.
