Getting around Príncipe
There is little public transport on Príncipe. How transfers, drivers and taxis work, what the roads are like and why you should arrive with cash.
Arrange it in advance. There is very little public transport on Príncipe, so you rely on hotel transfers, a hired driver and boats. Bring enough cash from São Tomé to pay for all of it.
How people actually get around
Hotel transfers
The most common option. Many hotels meet flights and some run shuttles to Santo António or nearby beaches. Confirm whether transfers are included or charged, and whether they meet every flight.
A driver for the day
For sightseeing beyond your hotel, a local driver is the practical choice. Agree the route, hours and price in advance. If you want walking or birding, ask for a guide rather than a driver.
Taxis
Limited and informal. Useful for short trips in and around Santo António if you agree a fare first.
Boats
Much of the coast is best seen from the sea. Boat trips are arranged through hotels or local operators and depend on the weather.
The roads
A paved main road links the airstrip, Santo António and the north of the island. Away from it, tracks are rougher and can need four-wheel drive after rain. Much of the south of the island is roadless forest, which is part of its appeal.
Cash and connectivity
There may be one ATM in Santo António and it is not reliably working. Bring the cash you need from São Tomé, in euros, plus a buffer in case of a delayed flight out. Mobile coverage is reasonable in Santo António and patchier elsewhere, so set up WhatsApp contacts with your hotel and driver before you fly.

There are drivers and some taxis, particularly around Santo António and the airstrip, but no reliable app and no meter culture. Agree a price first, or let your hotel arrange transport.
Can I rent a car on Príncipe?
