Diving and snorkelling
Volcanic reefs, seasons and visibility, the state of dive operators on São Tomé, and what to confirm before you pack your gear.
Volcanic reefs, endemic fish and very few divers. But the dive scene is small and operators change, so confirm the current centre, its certifications and equipment before you pack your gear.
What to expect
The islands’ underwater landscape is volcanic: rock reefs, walls and boulder fields rather than classic coral reefs, with tropical fish, some species found only in the Gulf of Guinea, and turtles. Snorkelling is good in sheltered bays when the sea is calm.
The operators: what we found
A diver review describes the dive base attached to a hotel in São Tomé city changing hands several times, with older names and websites outliving the businesses. As of October 2026, an SSI-listed dive centre is operating in the city. On Príncipe, diving and snorkelling are linked to some hotels. We have not yet verified any dive operator directly; we will do so before arranging any dive.
Before you book
- Confirm the operator’s current name, certification agency and instructor credentials.
- Ask about equipment age and servicing, and bring your own computer and mask if you can.
- Check your insurance covers diving and evacuation; there is no hyperbaric chamber we can confirm on the islands.
- Leave 24 hours between your last dive and any flight, including the Príncipe hop.
