Short answer

Turtles nest on the southern beaches of São Tomé and on Príncipe from roughly October to March. Humpback whales are offshore from roughly July to September. Neither is guaranteed, and the best experiences are with people who know the beaches and the sea.

Sea turtles

Four species nest on São Tomé: green, hawksbill, olive ridley and leatherback. The quiet southern beaches, such as Praia Jalé and Praia Inhame, are among the best-known nesting sites, and eco-lodges there may wake guests when a turtle comes ashore. Local conservation work, including by the NGO Programa Tatô, combines beach monitoring with community involvement.

Sources disagree slightly on timing: some give October to January for nesting with hatchlings from February to April, others November to March. Ask the lodge for recent activity before you book a night specifically for turtles.

Watching turtles responsibly

  • Go with a lodge guide or conservation team, not alone with a torch.
  • No white light or flash near nesting turtles or hatchlings.
  • Keep well back, stay behind the turtle and never touch.
  • Do not buy turtle shell products or eat turtle meat or eggs.

Humpback whales

Humpbacks migrate from southern feeding grounds to the warm waters of the Gulf of Guinea, which research suggests serve mainly as a calving and nursing area. Mother and calf pairs dominate sightings. The main window is roughly July to September, with some reports into October and November. Whale-watching trips run from Príncipe and São Tomé, usually arranged through hotels.

Good operators keep their distance, approach slowly from the side and limit time with each group of whales. Ask how they work before booking.

Quick answers

Which turtles nest in São Tomé?

Four species nest on São Tomé’s beaches: green, hawksbill, olive ridley and leatherback turtles. The island is also important for the critically endangered eastern Atlantic hawksbill population.

Are whale sightings guaranteed?

No. Humpbacks are generally present from around July to September, but numbers vary greatly from year to year. One writer spent eleven hours at sea off Príncipe without a sighting. Plan more than one chance if whales matter to you.

Can I volunteer with turtles?

Volunteer programmes exist, including multi-week turtle research placements run by organisations working on the islands. Check who runs them, what your fee pays for and how they work with local conservation groups.
