Trip length
How many days do you need?
What fits into 5, 7, 10 and 14 days, whether to add Príncipe, and where to base yourself in the north and south of São Tomé.
Seven days for São Tomé alone. Ten days for both islands. Fourteen days if you want to hike, go birding or travel slowly. Split São Tomé between a northern base and at least two nights in the south.
What fits
| Days | Realistic plan | What you miss |
|---|---|---|
| 4–5 | The capital, one north-coast day, one long day south to Cão Grande and Rolas | Príncipe, the cloud forest, any slack |
| 7 | North, the cloud forest, two or three nights in the south | Príncipe |
| 10 | São Tomé highlights plus three nights on Príncipe and a buffer night | Longer hikes, slow days |
| 14+ | Both islands at an easy pace, with hiking, birding or diving | Very little |
North or south?
Base: the capital or the highlands
Closest to the airport, the widest choice of places to stay and eat, the north-coast beaches and roças, and the cloud forest around Monte Café and Lagoa Amélia within reach.
Base: around Porto Alegre
Pico Cão Grande, black-rock coves, the boat to Ilhéu das Rolas and the turtle beaches. Fewer, simpler places to stay; you go for the landscape. Day trips from the capital are possible but long.
Our recommendation for most first visits is to start in the north and finish your São Tomé time in the south, then return to the capital for Príncipe or your flight home.
Adding Príncipe
Treat Príncipe as its own trip: at least two nights, ideally three to five, with a night in São Tomé on each side of the flight. Read how to get to Príncipe.
Also asked
Quick answers
Is a week enough for São Tomé & Príncipe?
A week is enough for São Tomé island on its own. If you want Príncipe as well, ten days is a more realistic minimum once you allow for the domestic flight and a buffer night.
Can I visit Príncipe as a day trip?
Technically, on days with a morning flight out and an afternoon flight back. In practice you would get a few hours on the island and risk a delay disrupting the rest of your trip. We recommend at least two nights.
Should I stay in the north or the south of São Tomé?
Both, if you can. Base yourself in or near the capital for the north and the cloud forest, then move south for at least two nights for Pico Cão Grande, Porto Alegre and Ilhéu das Rolas, rather than doing long return drives every day.
