Sample itinerary
Two weeks, both islands, no rushing
The unhurried version: nine nights on São Tomé including four in the far south, four on Príncipe, and a last night near the airport. Built-in slack for rain, sea conditions and the domestic flight.
This is a researched planning example, not a fixed package or a trip we have run on these exact dates. Drive times are estimates. Flights, boats, guides and rooms are confirmed for your dates only when we quote, and the order often changes around the domestic flight schedule and the weather.
Day by day
-
Day 1. São Tomé city
Arrive in São Tomé
The airport sits on the edge of the capital, so the transfer is short. Depending on your arrival time, walk the seafront Marginal, change some euros at a bank rather than the airport desk, and get a local SIM card sorted.
-
Day 2. São Tomé city
North coast and the roças
A full day west along the north coast with a driver-guide, including Roça Agostinho Neto and the fishing villages towards Neves.
-
Day 3. Highland lodge
Into the highlands
Move inland to the cloud forest around Monte Café. Afternoon walk and an early night.
-
Day 4. Highland lodge
Lagoa Amélia, or further
Guided walk to Lagoa Amélia. Experienced hikers can ask about a guided ascent of Pico de São Tomé, the island’s highest peak, which is a much bigger undertaking and may need an extra day.
Pico de São Tomé access, duration and guide requirements must be confirmed per trip. -
Day 5. The south
Down the east coast
Boca do Inferno, Santana, Ribeira Afonso and São João dos Angolares on the way to the far south.
-
Day 6. The south
Pico Cão Grande
An early guided walk towards the base of Cão Grande, or viewpoints only. Afternoon at the lodge.
-
Day 7. The south
Ilhéu das Rolas
Boat to Rolas and the equator monument; beaches in the afternoon.
-
Day 8. The south
The far south coast
A coastal walk between southern beaches such as Praia Jalé and Praia Inhame. In turtle season, roughly October to March, these are the beaches to ask about at night.
Swimming can be unsafe on some southern beaches because of currents. -
Day 9. São Tomé city
Back to the capital
Drive north and sleep near the airport for tomorrow’s flight.
-
Day 10. Príncipe
Fly to Príncipe
Morning flight, transfer, and an afternoon in Santo António.
Bring enough euros in cash for Príncipe. -
Day 11. Príncipe
Praia Banana and the north coast
Beaches and snorkelling where conditions allow.
-
Day 12. Príncipe
Bay of Needles by boat
A boat trip along the coast to the Bay of Needles, or whale watching from roughly July to September.
-
Day 13. Príncipe
Forest and birds
An early guided walk for Príncipe’s endemic birds and a slower afternoon.
-
Day 14. São Tomé city
Roça Sundy, then fly back
Morning at Roça Sundy and the 1919 eclipse site, then the flight back to São Tomé and a final night near the airport. Fly home the next day.
Keep this buffer night. Do not connect straight onto an international flight.
Book ahead
